SC Questions the Limits of Obscenity
The Supreme Court has strongly criticized YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia for his controversial remark made on comedian Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent. The court raised concerns about the language used by influencers, specifically questioning whether his statement—”watch parents have sex”—was not considered obscenity.
“Do you subscribe to the language that he has used? What is the parameter of obscenity? This is Indian society. We would like to know, in this country, if this is not obscenity, then what is?” the apex court asked Allahbadia’s lawyer during the hearing.
Legal Action against Ranveer Allahbadia
The case against Allahbadia involves multiple FIRs registered in Maharashtra, Assam, and Jaipur. Despite these legal actions, the YouTuber has reportedly remained inaccessible, according to a joint statement from Mumbai and Guwahati Police. The Supreme Court has now issued notices on his plea seeking the clubbing of these FIRs and granted him interim protection from arrest.
The protection is conditional upon Allahbadia’s full cooperation with the investigation. However, his counsel will not be permitted to accompany him during police station visits. Additionally, the court has allowed him to seek protection from the local police in Maharashtra and Assam if he faces any threats while cooperating with the probe.
SC Directs Temporary Withdrawal from Show Business
In a significant directive, the Supreme Court has instructed Allahbadia and his associates to stay away from show business for some time. This move comes as a part of the court’s firm stance against irresponsible conduct by influencers like Ranveer Allahbadia.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh reprimanded the influencer, stating, “The kind of brothers you’ve chosen, parents, brothers, and sisters will feel ashamed.”
Ranveer Allahbadia has received temporary relief from arrest
While Ranveer Allahbadia has received temporary relief from arrest, the Supreme Court’s remarks highlight the growing concerns over the content produced by social media influencers. The case serves as a reminder that digital creators must exercise responsibility when engaging with their audiences. The legal proceedings will continue as the apex court evaluates the need for stricter regulations on social media discourse.
The controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent and Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks has sparked a debate on the definition of obscenity in India, setting a crucial precedent for future cases involving content creators like Ranveer Allahbadia.
