Popular YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, widely known as ‘BeerBiceps,’ has landed in hot water following a massive backlash over his remarks on the reality show India’s Got Latent. The controversy erupted after a clip featuring his controversial comments went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism. In response to the uproar, Ranveer issued a public apology, admitting that his attempt at humor had crossed the line.
Ranveer Allahbadia aka BeerBicep’s Apology
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ranveer aka BeerBiceps acknowledged the backlash and expressed regret for his words. In his apology, he wrote, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s Got Latent. I’m sorry.” He also conceded that “comedy is not my forte” and admitted that his comments “weren’t cool.”
What Led to the Controversy?
For those unfamiliar with the situation, the outrage stems from a clip in which Ranveer was heard asking a contestant an inappropriate and distasteful question. “Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life or join in once to stop it forever?” The comment, deemed vulgar by many, quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread criticism from the public and prominent figures alike.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Reacts
The controversy gained further traction when Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the issue. Although he admitted to not having watched the clip, he was briefed about the nature of the remarks. Expressing his disapproval, Fadnavis stated, “I have been informed about this, though I have not watched it yet. I came to know that it was very vulgar and this was wrong. Everyone has freedom of speech, but this freedom ends when we encroach upon others’ freedom. Everyone has limits, and if anyone crosses them, action will be taken.”
Legal Complaints and Public Outrage
Adding to Ranveer’s troubles, two Mumbai-based lawyers have officially filed a police complaint against him and other comedians involved in the show. The legal complaint has also been escalated to Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phalsankar and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, urging action against what they believe to be content that disrespects women.
Journalist and lyricist Neelesh Misra also condemned the content of the show, labeling the creators “perverted” and questioning their impact on India’s creative industry. In a post on X, he expressed his disappointment, writing, “This content is not designated as adult content—it can be easily accessed by children if the algorithm leads them there. The creators and the platform show zero responsibility. I’m also not surprised that four people at the desk—and many in the audience—celebrated this and laughed.”
Previous Controversies Surrounding ‘India’s Got Latent’
This is not the first time India’s Got Latent has stirred controversy. Just last week, a contestant from Arunachal Pradesh was reportedly booked over a remark related to dog meat. Further intensifying debates about the show’s content.
Immediate Fallout: Loss of Subscribers
The backlash has had a direct impact on Ranveer Allahbadia’s online presence. Following the viral video, he reportedly lost nearly 2 million subscribers almost instantly. Marking a significant blow to his digital influence.
The Bigger Conversation
This incident has reignited discussions about the responsibilities of digital content creators and the thin line between humor and offensive content. While some believe that Ranveer’s apology should be the end of the matter. Others argue that greater accountability is needed in the online entertainment space.
As debates continue, it remains to be seen whether India’s Got Latent will implement changes in response to these growing concerns or if further actions will be taken against those involved.
