Pankaj Dheer, best known as Karna in Mahabharat, passes away at 68.

Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, widely celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Karna in BR Chopra’s legendary television series Mahabharat, passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. He was 68. The actor had been battling cancer for some time, and his demise has left the entertainment industry and fans across the country in mourning.

Pankaj Dheer’s Final Farewell in Mumbai

The Cine and TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) officially confirmed the heartbreaking news. In a solemn statement, they expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their former General Secretary and Trust Chairman. The cremation was scheduled for 4:30 pm at the cremation ground next to Pawan Hans in Vile Parle (West), Mumbai. Family, friends, and colleagues gathered to bid their final goodbye to the beloved actor.

Tributes from Co-stars and Family

Soon after the news broke, actor Arjun, who played the role of Arjun in Mahabharat, shared his condolences on social media, remembering the camaraderie and respect they shared during the show’s filming.

Meanwhile, Pankaj Dheer’s son, actor Nikitin Dheer, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram. In his story, he wrote, “Whatever comes, Let it come. Whatever stays, Let it stay. Whatever goes, Let it go. As a Shiva Bhakt, say ‘Shivarpanam’ and move on! He’ll take care! – but very hard to do.” The emotional note resonated with many, and fans reposted it widely. Nikitin, known for his roles in Chennai Express, Jodhaa Akbar, and Sooryavanshi, is married to television actress Kratika Sengar, famed for Jhansi Ki Rani.

Although Pankaj Dheer played numerous roles throughout his career, it was his portrayal of Karna that immortalized him in the hearts of millions. In a 2020 interview with SCREEN, he reflected on the profound impact of the role. He shared that even school textbooks used his image to represent Karna, and temples had been built in his honor. One such temple even features an eight-foot statue of him, where devotees come to offer prayers. “People have accepted me as Karna,” he said, overwhelmed by the love he received.

Interestingly, despite being offered roles in various remakes of Mahabharat, Pankaj consistently declined them. He believed that playing Karna once was enough. “It’s not about money,” he explained. “I don’t want to confuse my fans. It wouldn’t be fair to their love.”

Beyond Mahabharat: A Versatile Performer

In addition to his mythological fame, Pankaj Dheer had a rich filmography. He appeared in Bollywood hits like Baadshah with Shah Rukh Khan, Tumko Na Bhool Payenge alongside Salman Khan, and Zameen starring Ajay Devgn. His television career was equally vibrant, with roles in popular shows such as Sasural Simar Ka and Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat.

Pankaj Dheer’s contribution to Indian television and cinema is immeasurable. His dedication to his craft, his refusal to dilute the emotional bond fans had with his character, and his humility made him a rare gem in the entertainment world. As the industry mourns his loss, his legacy as Karna—and as a deeply respected artist—will continue to inspire generations.

May his soul rest in peace.
