Veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic voices in Indian music, passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the heartbreaking news. The singer reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Although hospital authorities initially stated she was responding well to treatment, the situation worsened by afternoon, leading to her demise.

Asha Bhosle’s Final Rites and Public Homage

Her mortal remains were taken to her residence at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, where they were kept for antim darshan. Tomorrow, April 13, her body will be open for public homage at 11 AM, before the final rites scheduled at 4 PM at Shivaji Park, Mumbai. Leaders, celebrities, and fans are expected to gather to bid farewell to the legendary singer.

Tributes from Bollywood

The news of her passing triggered an outpouring of grief across India. Salman Khan expressed his sorrow on X, calling her death a “huge loss for Indian music” and describing her voice as irreplaceable. Hrithik Roshan remembered her as the “Queen of Indian playback singing,” highlighting her warmth and constant presence in his life.

Raj Thackeray, MNS leader, compared the musical legacy of Asha Bhosle and her sister Lata Mangeshkar to the Renaissance masters Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, stating that with her passing, “the last great pillar of that golden renaissance era in India has fallen.” Vidya Balan visited her residence to offer condolences, recalling her collaboration with Bhosle in Begum Jaan (2017). Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis also paid respects to the grieving family.

In respect to her legacy, Dharma Productions announced the postponement of the release of the Chand Mera Dil title track featuring Ananya Panday and Lakshya. The production house stated that the delay was a tribute to Asha ji’s lasting impact on Indian music.

Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle began her musical journey at the age of 10, recording her first song for a Marathi film in 1943. Rising to prominence in the 1950s, she went on to record over 12,500 songs across multiple Indian languages. Her versatility spanned classical, ghazals, cabaret, pop, and folk music.
