The 71st National Film Awards unfolded as a spectacular celebration of cinematic excellence, held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. With President Droupadi Murmu presenting the honours, the evening turned into a heartfelt tribute to the power of storytelling, diversity, and artistic brilliance across Indian cinema.

For the first time in their illustrious careers, Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji received National Awards, drawing thunderous applause and cheers from the audience. Shah Rukh was honoured as Best Actor for his gripping performance in Jawan, while Vikrant Massey shared the same title for his role in 12th Fail. Rani Mukerji, meanwhile, took home Best Actress for her emotionally charged portrayal in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Their wins marked a significant moment, not just for Bollywood, but for fans who have long awaited such recognition for these stars.

Mohanlal Receives Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal was bestowed with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, earning a standing ovation. With over 360 films and a career spanning five decades, Mohanlal’s contribution to Indian cinema is monumental. President Murmu praised his emotional range and ability to portray both tender and intense characters with ease. Mohanlal, deeply moved, dedicated the award to the entire Malayalam film fraternity, calling it a collective honour for their legacy and resilience.

President Murmu’s Powerful Address

In her speech, President Murmu highlighted the evolving role of women in cinema. She acknowledged the rise of female voices — not just as actors, but as producers and storytellers. Films that portray strong women, mothers, and social change were lauded. She urged winners to thank their crews, emphasizing that behind every successful film is a hardworking team. Moreover, she likened cinema to literature, noting its ability to flourish across languages and regions.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail was declared Best Film, cementing its place as a cinematic triumph. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, produced by Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta, won Best Popular Film for Wholesome Entertainment. Sudipto Sen earned Best Director for The Kerala Story, a film that sparked conversations nationwide.

In addition, Meghna Gulzar and Ronnie Screwvala’s Sam Bahadur was honoured for promoting national, social, and environmental values. Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery, starring Sanya Malhotra, was named Best Hindi Film.

Vaibhavi Merchant won Best Choreography for the vibrant “Dhindhora Baaje” from Rocky Aur Rani. Shilpa Rao’s soulful rendition of “Chaleya” from Jawan earned her Best Female Playback Singer. PVN S Rohit took home Best Male Playback Singer for “Premisthunna” in the Telugu film Baby.

GV Prakash Kumar was celebrated as Best Music Director for his work in Vaathi, while Kasarla Shyam won Best Lyricist for Balagam. Animal dominated the sound categories, winning for sound design, background score, and re-recording.

Government’s Push for “Make in India” in Films

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the need for indigenous production of film equipment. He announced upcoming initiatives to manufacture high-end cameras and gear in India. Additionally, he proposed policy reforms to strengthen the live concert economy, aiming to boost entertainment infrastructure nationwide.

The 71st National Film Awards not only honoured cinematic brilliance but also reflected the changing face of Indian cinema. From mainstream blockbusters to regional gems, from powerful female narratives to technical mastery — the evening celebrated it all.
